Tropical percussion, funky grooves and a touch of vintage: that’s the successful recipe for the delicious sound cocktail that Mop Mop has been serving up for decades. Together with his electronic trio and Anthony Joseph, he will transform GROUNDS into a sultry club where songs full of pure voodoo jazz, Caribbean flavours, Afro-funk, exotic rhythms and soul music will come to life.
Mop Mop is the brainchild of Italian multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Andrea Benini and his ongoing quest to explore diverse styles. The result is a new postmodern sound that combines jazz with funk, Afrobeat and an exotic soundscape. Furthermore, the soundtracks of Italian films from the 1950s and 1960s and the entire spectrum of Afro-African music are also continuous sources of inspiration. Roots, gospel, soul, bebop: they all contribute to the unique sound of Mop Mop, which has earned him a place alongside artists such as Quantic and Gilles Peterson in the world of tropical grooves and voodoo jazz.
On each of his five studio albums, he takes you, just like Sun Ra, on a wonderful journey to imaginary places. And of course, Anthony Joseph’s voice is an essential part of this. Because the Trinidad born musician and poet, who conjures echoes of Gil Scott Heron and Isaac Hayes, knows better than anyone how to bring the Afro-Caribbean vibe to life.
