Mothersfonk

What better way to start the weekend than with the hardest grooves, banging beats and sparkling solos? Mothersfonk makes themselves heard: straight, without frills, with raw, high-energy, groovy tunes. From tiny clubs to giant stages, they always make it a party!

Mothersfonk is the Netherlands’ new funk sensation. The eight-member formation from Rotterdam brings a rousing mix of funk and hip-hop, characterised by deep pocket grooves interspersed with tight breaks and virtuoso solo work. Inspired by the ‘godfather of soul’, they give funk, their own interpretation and contemporary sound.

The band members have each individually gained experience in diverse performing bands and collaborations with household names such as Joseph Bowie (Defunkt), Shirma Rouse, Fred Wesley, Jamal Thomas Band (drummer Maceo Parker), Focus, Living blues experience, Miko Weaver (guitarist Prince), Nile Rodgers Tribute Band and LoĂŻs Lane.

Nakumba

Nakumba’s vibrant ensemble effortlessly blends Latin, Brazilian, and African grooves with a touch of jazz. Danceable, deep and emotionally rich, bringing both smiles and tears.

The band was formed around vocalist Sophie Nakou. Born in Greece, she was literally raised on music. Her father, a traditional singer, introduced her to the modal music of Central Greece from a young age. After exploring pop and jazz, and spending an inspiring year in Barcelona, she discovered a passion for Latin American music. She brought all these influences with her to the Rotterdam Conservatory, where the foundation for Nakumba was laid: a melting pot of cultures, styles, and sounds.

Guitarist Paulo Bouwman adds the African element. A well-known figure in the Cape Verdean music scene, he is active as a guitarist, bandleader, and producer. The multicultural soul of Rotterdam resonates through Nakumba’s music: rich, diverse, and constantly evolving. From the sultry sounds of Rosa Passos and Maria Rita to the poetic protest songs of Silvio RodrĂguez and Pablo MilanĂ©s. The repertoire takes you on an emotional journey.

Line-up:
Sophie Nakou – vocals
Paulo Bouwman – guitar
Jeroen van der Ley – bass
Walter Matos – drums
